The Enological Week in
Montefalco proved to
be the ideal setting for
the introduction of the
new reference point Saiagricola have dreamt up for the
region of Umbria: Còlpetrone made the official launch of
“Gòld”, their Montefalco Sagrantino selection. “Gòld” 2004
was the “guest of honour” at the DegustAzione, the original
tasting voyage of discovery through the vineyards and cellars
of Còlpetrone guided by Lorenzo Landi and Roberto da
Frassini and which was reserved for a chosen audience of opinion
leaders and foreign and domestic journalists.
The journey through the production cycle of this superb wine
from bud to bottle is designed to inspire and inform members of
the trade and the press.
This was the perfect opportunity to get to know the wine through
the characteristics of the grape in the vineyard, of the wine in barrel and finally of the wine in bottle but
not yet released on to the market: to see the various phases of Sagrantino from birth to maturity.
Thus on a journey back in time ending up with Gòld 2004 in the glass, we passed from bunches of grapes
from the 2008 harvest, to a tasting of the 2007 vintage still maturing in barrel, to a 2006 wine still
fining in the bottle, back to 2005 the latest vintage to be released. “The intention we had in creating this
selection (Gòld)”explained Landi, “was not to produce a Sagrantino of more power but one of greater elegance,
complexity and, if possible, longevity. For this reason the choice of site will vary from year to year
in accordance with weather patterns and the nature of the crop itself.” But the news, in true Saiagricola
style did not end here. At the end of a day full of stress and strain, there's
nothing like a good M'Assaggio. The ideal finale of a sweet and relaxing
tasting of Sagrantino Passito 2005 matched with hand-made chocolates, in
the comfort of an armchair vibrating in time to some music: this must make
for the most pleasant M'Assaggio of the day. Active participation meets full relaxation!
